Farmers Get Creative to Earn More Money

Updated: January 7, 2009
Farming hasn`t been an easy business, especially since many farmers say it`s been tough to turn a profit. "Diversification is the word. Farmers can`t make it with crop prices as they are," said Dr. Ward Bitely, farmland owner. Bitely says he and other farmers are having to diversify to another crop, but it`s not something they can plant in the ground, it`s game. They`re letting hunters lease the land for hunting during the winter, when there`s nothing growing on it. During the winter, Bitely says, farmers can flood their rice fields giving the ducks a place to land, and duck hunters a place to hunt. "We`ve been seeing some profits from it. It`s a very slow growing thing. This is very new for many of the farmers," Bitely said. Bitely`s other source of income is to lease the land for other farmers to use. He says they`re expecting to double their income by leasing the land for hunting.
