A Lonoke County sheriff`s deputy was wounded and a suspect was killed early Thursday morning after an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop. The stop occurred at about 2:30 a.m. near the interchange of US 67/167 and Arkansas 5. Sheriff`s Sergeant Paul Curtis says four people were in the stopped vehicle, and Deputy Vernon Williams ended up in a struggle with one of them. Curtis says shots were fired and the deputy returned fire, killing the suspect. The dead man`s name had not been released. Williams was hit several times, but his bulletproof vest stopped two rounds. Curtis says Williams is in stable condition at an area hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery. Witnesses, including the other people in the car, are still being interviewed.
