An attorney says a partial settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed after a Mountainburg school bus crash killed three students. The National Transportation Safety Board said the crash was brought about by substandard maintenance and inspection of brakes on the tractor-trailer that plowed into the bus in May 2001. Families of nine students and the bus driver sued the trucking company, the truck`s owner and driver, among others. Niki Cung, a Fort Smith lawyer, represents the company, its owner and driver. She says the families reached a settlement with some defendants Friday. Cung`s clients were NOT part of the settlement. She would not say which defendants were involved or what the settlement terms were. A federal judge still must approve the settlement. The lawyer says trial is set for January.
