MLK Commission Votes On Leader, Again

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
For a third time, the Martin Luther King Commission could not agree on what to do about its leader. That means that, for now, Tracy Steele remains commission director. During a raucous meeting today in Little Rock, the commission took another vote on whether to keep Steele, who`s also a state senator. But the motion to fire him got only nine votes. The commission chairman ruled that it needed 12. Yesterday, a former legislator who sponsored the bill creating the commission tried to mediate in the controversy. Former Representative Josetta Wilkins met privately with Steele and commission member Sylvester Smith, a leader in the effort to oust Steele. Wilkins says she proposed an independent evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the commission and its staff. She says evaluators would recommend changes, if any, in the organization.
