Huckabee Moves Ahead On Education Reform

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Governor Huckabee says he plans to have a draft of an education reform ballot initiative ready within a month as a fallback on school reform. The governor says he is more optimistic about reaching a legislative solution, but is working on the initiative just in case. But state Senator Paul Miller says opponents of Huckabee`s plan are working on their own ballot measures. Miller says that would give Huckabee opponents something to campaign for instead of just campaigning against the governor. Legislators and educators are trying to find reform measures to address a state Supreme Court ruling that Arkansas` public schools are unconstitutionally funded and inadequate. The state has a January deadline to implement solutions. Huckabee has proposed raising standards and consolidating small districts that cannot meet those standards affordably. Opponents have said they will not back any plan that includes consolidation.
