Union officials in Pine Bluff say 45 jobs at Union Pacific are being cut.
The employees were told to go home yesterday morning when the railroad`s 87 positions were cut to 42. Company officials say the eliminated positions include 43 mechanical railroad jobs, one administrative employee and one foreman.
John Bromley, with Union Pacific public affairs, says the layoffs in Pine Bluff were unrelated to the April 2002 decision to move 41 Pine Bluff jobs elsewhere.
Bromley says the economic slump has played a part in cutting
jobs, but the primary reason is the railroad`s new locomotives require less maintenance than the older models.
