UCA May Need More Student Housing

Updated: January 7, 2009
University of Central Arkansas president Lu Hardin says a shortage of student housing could hurt efforts at increasing enrollment. The Conway school will see an increase of nearly 700 students for the fall semester -- the largest enrollment jump in the university`s 96-year history. That left administrators hard-pressed to find space for the nearly one-third of students who require university housing. Enrollment continues to climb toward a goal of 10,000. And Hardin says administrators must decide whether they want to continue adding student housing or cap enrollment. Currently, the university has 12 on-campus residence halls, two apartment complexes and another apartment complex under a lease-to-own agreement. University officials looked to private apartments to add hundreds more beds for this year.
