Update: Chilean Crews Reinforce Shaft for Miners' Rescue

By: Newsroom Solutions
Updated: October 11, 2010

Crews in Chile have reinforced an escape shaft in preparation for this week's anticipated rescue of 33 miners trapped deep underground.

If all goes according to plan, the miners will be lifted to the surface one at a time, using a two-thousand-foot-long shaft that was completed Saturday.

Government officials say the effort to bring the men back to the surface could begin on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The news sparked celebrations across Chile.

President Sebastian Pinera also announced plans to visit the mine on Tuesday.

The miners have been trapped underground since a cave-in on August 5th.
