Updated: May 5, 2010
A new "USA Today"/Gallup Poll finds 92-percent of Americans believe there is a God, and 83-percent believe this God answers their prayers.

One-thousand adults participated in the survey on May 1st and 2nd.

The release of the poll comes one day before Thursday's National Day of Prayer, an annual observance that invites all faiths to pray for the nation.

Although a private conservative evangelical group called the National Day of Prayer Task Force claims the day is set aside to "publicize and promote Christian prayer," the poll finds 36-percent of respondents feel it should not be so limited.

When asked if the special observance mattered, about 57-percent said it does, while 38-percent believe it does not.

Nearly 60-percent of 18 to 29-year-olds believe the day does not matter.
