With the first day of school just around the corner, families across the state are buying supplies and new clothes for the new school year.  However, this year may be tougher for more families.

The Arkansas Rice Depot helps more than 25,000 children in need at schools across the state.  Essie Stratton and her grandson Torey are helped by the organization.  They supply Essie with food and give Torey new clothes and supplies for the school year.

Officials at the Rice Depot say they will help more children this year, not only because they expand the program every year, but also because they're anticipating a greater need because of the economy.

The organization got a big boost, thanks to the Today show's "Lend a Hand Today" program last month.  They received more than $600,000 worth of items, including cleaning supplies, washers and dryers and food.  The supplies and electronics have gone to food pantries across the state and so has the $65,000 worth of chicken from Tyson.

The organization still needs food for their Food for Kids program, because what they currently have will go quickly.  For more information about the Rice Depot, click here.
