Powerball Decision Could Come Wednesday

By: KARK 4 News
Updated: September 23, 2009
The Arkansas Lottery Commission could decide as early as Wednesday about the state joining the Powerball game.

The invitation earlier this month from the Multi-State Lottery Association is one item on the agenda for the commission's afternoon meeting.

Other items include reports from Lottery Executive Director Ernie Passailaigue, scratch-off tickets, a proposed start-up budget and other business.

Passailaigue said last week that he hopes the state begins selling scratch off tickets by October 29th (see note below).

If the commission decides to join Powerball, Passailaigue says tickets could be available by early 2010.

The lottery director believes once the lottery is up and running Arkansas could see 1.5 million-dollars a day in sales.

Powerball is played in 30 states, along with the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game has had record jackpots soar into the hundreds of millions.

[Note: Since this story was published, the Lottery Commission has decided to start scratch-off sales on September 28th, Powerball ticket sales on October 31st, and Arkansas draw games ticket sales on December 14th.]
