Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman is "doing well" following surgery to repair injuries he suffered as a result of a car accident Sunday night.

The actor's rep Donna Lee says in a statement to "People" magazine that Freeman underwent a four-and-a-half hour surgery Monday night to reconnect nerves and repair damage in his left arm and hand. She adds that as of Tuesday morning, Freeman was up and walking around and hoping to be released in a few days. He also has entertained visits from his family.

Freeman was reportedly driving in Mississippi Sunday night when his vehicle went off the edge of the road and flipped several times before coming to a stop. Emergency crews needed the jaws of life to remove Freeman and his passenger from the car. Both were airlifted to the hospital in Memphis.

The passenger has been identified as Demaris Meyer of Memphis, who his rep says is a friend of Freeman's.
