Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

 What is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is the emergency substitution of heart and lung action to restore life to someone who appears dead. The two main components of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are chest compression to make the heart pump and mouth-to-mouth ventilation for the victim. In the event of an early heart attack, death can often be avoided if a bystander starts CPR immediately (within 5 minutes of the onset of ventricular fibrillation). When the paramedics arrive, medications and/or electrical shock to the heart can be administered to convert ventricular fibrillation to a normal heart rhythm. Therefore, prompt CPR and rapid paramedic response can improve the chances of survival from a heart attack.
