Morris sent a letter to school board president Diane Curry. The reason for his departure is said to be private in nature.  In his letter, Holmes said, "I have given a good deal of energy to the job of superintendent and have appreciated the work and relationships."

"We regret Dr. Holmes will not be able to stay through June 30th, but we appreciate his tireless efforts of behalf all of the students and families in the district," said Curry.  "We will always be grateful that he came out of retirement to help us during this time,  to stabilize this district and refocus our efforts on the needs of students."

The board is putting together a transition team to manage the district between March 22nd and the arrival of the new superintendent.  The final of four candidates will be interviewed Monday. The Board will meet Tuesday to begin deliberations on the selection.

Holmes has served as a teacher, principal and superintendent in the Little Rock School District. His most recent term of employment began in January, 2011.
