Update (February 28):
NEWPORT, AR - There's improvement to report in the condition of a Newport mom injured in a shooting that killed her one-year-old daughter.

It happened around 2:30 Wednesday morning on Daughtery Street.

KAIT-TV in Jonesboro reports that Delana Aguerre Roddy, 21, is now in stable condition, according to family and friends.

Roddy was shot three to four times in the torso as she laid in bed with her baby daughter, Tacari Danielle Briggs.

Original Story (February 27):
NEWPORT, AR - A one-year-old baby has died in a shooting at Newport (Jackson County) that also left the child's mother with gunshot wounds. The mother was med-flighted to Little Rock, and her condition is unknown.

According to Newport Police, they were called to the scene shortly after three o'clock this morning. Police say the 911 call reporting the incident came from the injured woman, who told dispatchers she had been shot several times.

"Everybody was asleep in bed," said Newport Police Chief Michael Scrudder. "The shots went through the window, and hit the child and mother who were sleeping in bed on a matter on the floor."

The baby girl was pronounced dead at a local hospital and the woman was airlifted to another hospital in Little Rock in critical condition.

"I've never seen a case like this while I've been here," said Scrudder, who has served as Police Chief for 13 years and lived in Newport for over three decades.

Family and friends released the names of the child and mother to KARK, but police have not released their names, so we are holding that information so as to not jeopardize the investigation.

According to Scrudder, police had detained a person of interest for questioning, but so far no formal charges have been filed.

"I feel like I'm sleeping, and when I wake up it is going to hit me hard," said long-time family friend Latesha Bailey. "That baby did not deserve this. She was just learning to walk, and it tickled us 'cause she looked like she was going to be bowlegged."

Police did confirm that two other children were in the home at the time of the shooting, they are unharmed.

Family and friends believe the woman knew the shooter, describing this as a possible domestic dispute that turned deadly.

"Whoever did this, and I'm not saying I know who it is, but whoever did it has one foot in hell and the other in jail. God will punish them, because she was innocent," Bailey said.

By Wednesday afternoon, a makeshift memorial of teddy bears had been placed outside the family's home, in front of a wall decorated with the children's hand prints.
