Pulaski County SW Health Unit Closed

Updated: February 6, 2013
The Pulaski County Southwest Health Unit is closed after employees complained of smelling something odd in the building and feeling sick.

At first the Arkansas Department of Health thought mold could be the problem, but that's not the case. Workers at the building Wednesday say they found a leak and some ventilation issues, and the Arkansas Department of Health closed the health unit until repairs are complete.

The Arkansas Department of Health ran several tests at the health unit and found nothing toxic that would be harmful to anyone's health, but many employees complained smelling something odd, having headaches, and red eyes. The Dept. of Health wants to reassure employees and patients they are working to fix the issues. Ed Barham, spokesperson for the Arkansas Dept. of Health says Pulaski County manages and owns the building, but ADH provides the services. "We're working with them to get the maintenance things worked out."

Barham says it's unknown how long the Southwest Health Unit will be closed, however patients are encouraged to visit one of the other 4 health units.

The Arkansas Department of Health wants a new building, but right now the funding is just enough for routine maintenance and repairs.
