Fayetteville Police Department Unveils Memorial for Fallen Officers

By: KNWA-TV, Fayetteville
Updated: February 4, 2013
The Fayetteville Police Department announced today the purchase of a memorial for two fallen officers.

Since the department was established in 1870, two Fayetteville police officers have been killed in the line of duty.

The first, City Marshal William D. Patton, was killed on July 2, 1881 near the Fayetteville Square.

Patrolman Lem McPherson was the second officer killed in the line of duty. He was shot on April 28, 1928 near Willow Ave. and Center St.

The stone for the memorial was placed in front of the police department on Friday with the names of the two officers inscribed on the front.

The department invites the public to visit what they call a long overdue tribute to Patton and McPherson.

The police department is located on Rock Street near the Fayetteville Square.
