The incident happened shortly before 8 pm January 31, 2013 as Officer William Michael McGary helped direct traffic around a car accident on Dave Ward Drive and Exchange. McGary, who has been with the department just shy of two years, was standing outside of his vehicle when he was hit by another vehicle. Officer McGary was airlifted from the scene to a Little Rock Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. No one else was seriously injured in the accident.
Arkansas State Police and the Conway Fire Department assisted CPD at the scene and are helping with the investigation. The driver of the vehicle that hit Officer McGary was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
Officer McGary is well liked by his co-workers and has been a wonderful addition to CPD. We would like to thank everyone for their support, from the Faulkner County Sheriff's Office to Little Rock Police Department, other area agencies and to the public. Please keep the family and our department in your thoughts and prayers.
As you would imagine this is a very difficult time for the McGary family and the Conway Police Department. Our officers, along with CPD chaplains have been with the McGary family since the accident and will remain by their side throughout.
