Man Charged with Battery, DWI Drugs After Hitting Conway Police Officer with Car

A man faces several charges after hitting a Conway Police officer with his car.

Conway Police say 26-yera-old Officer William Michael McGary was directing traffic at a crash scene just before 8:00 Thursday night when he was hit by a vehicle.

Police arrested 31-year-old Barry Strickland and charged him with first-degree battery, DWI drugs and other undisclosed traffic offenses.

Strickland is currently being held on $150,000 bond in the Faulkner County Detention Center.

In a news release, Conway Chief of Police AJ Gary said, "On behalf of the Conway Police Department, we wish to express our appreciation for the Baptist Medical Center staff and all the police agencies, Conway Police Department Chaplains and citizens of Conway for their support.
We ask that you keep the family and the police department in your prayers as we go through this most difficult time."

Chief Gary says McGary's condition is "stable right now, but very serious."
