City Wide Cleanup in Jacksonville Marks MLK Holiday

The holiday honoring slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be observed with ceremonies all across the country.
In Jacksonville today, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, Jacksonville NAACP branch, and the city of Jacksonville mayor's office co-sponsor an annual MLK Day event from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Even though the nucleus of the MLK, Jr. Commission will be in Washington, D.C. for President Obama's inauguration, other staffers will carry out the city wide cleanup with Jacksonville's NAACP. They will join the city of Jacksonville, North Little Rock, Little Rock and surrounding communities for the cleanup.
Since MLK Day commemorations coincide with the Presidential Inauguration, President Obama asked all citizens to join him in participating in the National Day of Service that was held on Saturday.
"This [collaboration of both organizations], Jacksonville, and the surrounding areas, will have an opportunity to give back to the community. We want everyone to realize the [importance] of making a commitment to pledge to serve after MLK Day throughout 2013," said DuShun Scarbrough, executive director of the MLK, Jr. Commission.
The MLK, Jr. Commission will sponsor free bus rides, [courtesy of Central Arkansas Transit (CAT)], for those outside Jacksonville who want to participate in the cleanup. Refreshments will be provided after the cleanup.
