"I'm actually surprised," said Little Rock school board member Dennis Burrow.
The school district for three years has been working to come up with ways to deal with truancy.
Thursday afternoon the district held a news conference to unveil the center, which is located in the Garland Building at 3615 W. 25th St. The purpose of the center is to have a place for police to take kids who are skipping school and get them in front of an intervention specialist.
If the parents cannot be located by noon when the center closes, police take the kids back to their school, Burrow said.
In the first quarter of 2012, the school district reported it had 190 chronically truant students.
