"Come on, up to your bed," said Kristin Agar.

Talk about a cushy life! Barney the dachshund climbed his pillow stairs to burrow under the covers of his brand new bed.

Just two weeks ago, Barney, was living a much different life.

"Well his name was Tyrone!" said Agar.

Short for tyrannosaurs rex, he was just one of the 400 animals left in the dark and cold when the electricity at the Pulaski County Humane Society went out on Christmas day.

"It's pitch black, 40 degrees, wet and 400 dogs are barking," said Agar.

Like countless others, she dropped off blankets and towels for the animals at the shelter, but left with Tyrone, or barney, under her arm.

"It just kind of happened and before I knew it off we went," she said.

Agar only expected to keep him until the heat at the shelter was turned back on. A bleeding heart animal lover, she had two dachshunds herself.

"I swore when they died I would never have a dachshund or dog again," Agar said.

As it turns out she couldn't resist Barney, who despite some health issues, reminded her so much of her other dogs.

"Their personalities they're so funny," she said.

You might say the power outage was the best Christmas gift Barney could have received.

"If someone got the better end of the deal here, it wasn't barney," Agar said, "It was me!"

Living large in his new forever home.

Agar said Barney is just one of the many wonderful older dogs at the shelter.

She encourages everyone to rescue if they're looking for a canine companion.
