Patients who suffer a mini-stroke have a one in twenty chance of having a major stroke within a week. Researchers in the U.K. reviewed several studies that analyzed the risk for major stroke after a patient suffered a "mini" stroke, or TIA. They found nearly 5 percent of TIA patients had a major stroke within seven days.
Patients who were treated in a special stroke unit had the lowest chance of suffering another stroke. Those who did not receive urgent care had the highest risk.
