The Pope County Fire Department confirmed that Hector Elementary School caught fire sometime before 10 p.m.
All fire units in Pope Co. responded to the late night fire, including crews from Jerusalem and Morrilton, totaling 11 fire departments and roughly 100 people.
Crews had to tank in water in since the rural area has no hookups, according to Pope Co. Sheriff Aaron Duvall.
The assistant fire chief said the support from the Morrilton Fire Department was "over the top." He says without their help, the fire would have spread to the middle school.
Three buildings were involved in the fire, according to Duvall.
As of 1:45 a.m., the fire had been contained. Crews will continue to work throughout the morning to watch for hot spots.
At this time, the cause is unclear.
No official word from the district on what will be done regarding school for students in the upcoming days.
However, Duvall did say "Christmas vacation may come early."
