Many baby boomers, the so-called sandwich generation, are doing double duty for parents and children.    It is an around the clock job that can lead to chronic stress.

For thousands of caregivers across Arkansas, simple survival means nights of little sleep and lots of worry. Mounting evidence shows this type of 'round the clock care giving can cause very real physical and psychological strain.

Experts emphasize the importance of time alone for caregivers.. of stepping away when possible...Attending support meetings and putting their health first to avoid problems later. There's no question that the stress of caring for an ill family member can actually cause illness.

You can reduce the risk by reaching out for help ... and accepting it.      Be specific when people ask how they can help: Suggest they bring dinner once a week or watch your loved one so you can get some time alone.

i have cared for my grandmother for over a year since she had a stroke. my dad recently had a motor cycle accident and he has moved in with us too so that i can help him. he is a paraplegic. thank you so much for this artical. there is comfort in knowing that i am not alone in the stress and worry that go along with taking care of others. i also have 4 kids so i am one busy lady at all times of the day. i do not have time for "me" but that goes along with taking care of others. they can not do for their selves so the caregiver has to do everything for them. i love my grandmother and my dad very much and know that they wouldnt get the care that they need anywhere else. although i find great comfort in knowing they are getting all the things they need. i also know that i am putting my future health in jeopardy. i feel the stress and i always feel drained. but i am so thankful for the time i get with them everyday so i feel greatful to have them. i just wanted to say thank you for the article. it made me feel not so alone. good job guys taking care of the community one article at a time.
