This is thanks in part to a simulation center that gives the students a hands on approach to learning. In fact, the hospital has a $50,000 mannequin is the perfect "practice patient", made to resemble a real person in almost every aspect.
Students learn to diagnose and perform procedures in a low stress scenario. Best of all the sessions are taped so they can watch and critique how they performed.
This hands on approach helping more than just future doctors The simulator's director says it's also a way to get hospital staff familiar with procedures they won't often see in the real world.
It's keeping health care workers with years of experience on their toes and giving students who haven't been put on the spot, a dose of reality..
Each UAMS medical student spends two of their rotation weeks going through this simulation training.
