Salvation Army Bell Ringer Defends Kettle from Armed Robber in Conway

Conway Police are boosting patrols to protect Salvation Army bell ringing volunteers after a report that an armed man tried to rob one of them Tuesday night.

It happened on the north side of town in front of the J.C. Penney store in the Conway Towne Centre.

The volunteer claims the man put a dollar into his kettle and before the ringer could say thanks, the man pulled out a gun.

The bell ringer told police he shielded his red kettle from the suspect, who drove off empty-handed in a red Camaro with Missouri tags.

Authorities say the kettle ringer told the man he was not going to get the money, and after a staring contest, the armed man left.
