Arkansas public education officials Monday morning said they are aiming to close the achievement gap by half by 2016.

Forty six schools are persistently scoring low in math and literacy, according to the latest school accountability report.

"We're are going to look at something that is one, achievable," said Arkansas Department of Education Commissioner Tim Kimbrell.

The mandate comes from the federal government's No Child Left Behind Act that was passed during then-President George W. Bush's first term.

After meeting with stakeholders, the state qualified for a wavier allowing it to have more flexibility in measuring school achievement levels and focusing on students who are struggling.
