Governor Mike Beebe had a lot of praise for the new speaker of the house on Friday.

Davy Carter of Cabot won in an upset, beating fellow Republican Terry Rice of Waldron in a secret ballot.

Carter wasn't even mentioned as a candidate for the speaker's seat until a few days ago, and now many are asking how he managed to defeat Rice, who was the party's pick for several months.

But the Governor didn't weigh in on the controversy, instead saying lawmakers made the right choice.

"He's experienced, knowledgeable, intelligent, reasonable. I think he'll be a good leader. I think he's brought Republicans and Democrats together," Beebe said.

When Carter is confirmed in January, he'll become the first Republican speaker since the Civil War.
