A drum roll accompanied a groundbreaking as folks gathered in Pine Bluff for the new Stem Academy and Conference Center on the campus of UAPB.

The new building will be 29,000 square feet and cost $8.2 million.

But it's a good investment in the future, according to Governor Mike Beebe.

"Stem Education is where the greatest number of new jobs are going to be in the future, and where some of the high salaries are going to be," he says. "That's science technology and engineering and mathematics. UAPB's new building to house those stem students will be a major asset to provide that kind of education for Eastern Arkansas, for Southeastern Arkansas.

The current stem class, headed by UAPB's Mary Benjamin, has 229 undergraduates and six graduate students.
