October is National Disabilities Month. And one local church is focusing on families with special need kids year around.
At first glance Jonathan's Child Sunday school classroom is similar to all the rest, but this class is designed for children with special needs.
"It's very hard to go into a normal classroom situation and take your child with you who maybe having a day - a really bad day," explains Jennifer Pike, mother of special needs child.
That's why Pike, along with other church members of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Searcy, created Jonathan's Child Sunday school.
"It gives us the opportunity for my son to come in and interact with other children that have similar needs. A place where he can relax and if he's crying, it's not a big deal," adds Pike.
And the Pikes aren't alone. There are five other families seeking this time with their family in a church setting.
And this Sunday school class isn't just for the kids, parents who wish to attend an adult Sunday school class...can.
There's an adjoining classroom with a one-way window into the children's area. Parents can study the Bible and keep a close eye on their little ones at the same time.
"For me it means a place to come together with friends who understand me. And offer my needs and offer me support and I can do the same for them," adds Pike.
