UAMS is currently in the middle of a $3.4 million study funded by the National Institutes of Health about depression and heart disease. This study is the first of it's kind.

College of Nursing Dean Lorraine Frazier is looking at 1,200 patients who gave blood samples immediately upon being admitted to hospitals because of a heart attack. When the patients are stable, depression and demographic information is collected.

The doctors preforming the study are trying to identify and treat depression in this group of individuals because if not treated, they are more susceptible to cardiac events.
