Rare Albino Squirrel Spotted in Northwest Arkansas

A rare albino squirrel has been spotted in Northwest Arkansas.
Park rangers working around Beaver Lake in Rogers made the discovery and got proof with a photograph.

"We recently discovered this little guy in one of the parks on Beaver Lake. He currently lives in a hollowed out oak tree and normally doesn't stray too far from his home. This is probably due to poor eyesight. He is in fact an Albino and not just "white." This squirrel has pink eyes signifying the absence of melanin and pigmentation which probably affects his vision. The chances of a squirrel being born with albinism are roughly 1 in 100,000. Pretty cool stuff to say the least. Hopefully he will stay at Beaver Lake for many years to come!!

I'm not really sure how rare this might be in Arkansas. Several people in Southeast Arkansas have show me mounts of what appeared to be albino squirrels just like the one pictured here. I have a solid black squirrel family in my backyard.
