Your high school or college diploma may help you beat cancer. A new study by the American Cancer Society looked at more than 130,000 cancer death records, among Black and White adults.
Death rates overall, for lung, prostate, breast and colon cancer were generally higher among Blacks than Whites with similar levels of education.
"About half of the cancers that were occurring in least educated group could have been avoided if they had death rates of more educated group," says Dr. Michael Thun of the American Cancer Society.
The findings don't suggest higher education as a cancer fighting strategy, but experts do endorse knowledge as an important tool for survival.
