Springdale Fifth Graders Designing Clothes with Classroom Technology

Springdale 5th graders Jacqueline Chamberlain and Summer Garner have found a way to blend technology with their love for fashion.

They said they aren't afraid to experiment with the latest styles.

"I like zebra print, I'm really into animal print and lots of neon colors, everything that's a fashion right now," said Chamberlain.

"It makes me stand out to where I'm not like anybody else," Garner said.

They're part of the EAST class at Sonora Elementary.

EAST stands for Environmental and Spacial Technology.

The students are in charge of their learning, and pick projects that involve the community.

EAST Facilitator Josh Worthy said the sky is the limit with this project, and the girls hope to take their clothing designs from the computer, to a runway.

"I want to make it and I want to wear it," Chamberlain said.

"The next step is to go out into the community and talk to professionals, pick their brain a little bit of what future possibilities could be down the road for them and what problems could they solve," said Worthy.

Whether the girls bring their ideas to life, or the designs just stay on the screen, they're gaining important tools for the future.

"These kids are getting that experience maybe ten years before hand and so they really start to build that foundation of talking with professionals and shaking hands and making eye contact."

And that's worth more than any wardrobe.
