Organizers of the independent non-profit program say statistics show Arkansas ranks first out of 50 states and the District of Columbia for food insecurity, which is a lack of adequate access to sufficient food to sustain life.
Feed Arkansas Kids was established to address the needs of children who suffer from hunger. The group is lead by Pastor Mark Evans, who is the chairman of the organization's board of directors.
There are 13,978 homeless children in Arkansas who get all of their meals from school lunches. These children go hungry every weekend.
"We live in a world where many people spend $5 for a cup of gourmet coffee," says Evans. "We can feed a deserving child for $6 per weekend."
Feed Arkansas Kids serves 500 of these children in Central Arkansas, but there are thousands of other children whose needs are unmet. The program discretely sends the children home with a backpack full of food every weekend.
In an effort to expand its services, Feed Arkansas Kids is kicking off a fundraising campaign tonight with events at the four central Arkansas Larry's Pizza restaurants from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
"This is an important cause, and we ask all Arkansans to help us erase childhood hunger in our great state," Evans says.
Cost of admission for the event is $12, which includes a buffet dinner and beverage.
