These days pencils and notebook paper aren't the only items needed to get ready for school.

The National Retail Federation says families will spend 13% more on electronics this year than last.  So, it's important to know you're getting quality items that won't break the bank.

If your teen carries his or her laptop to school, experts say invest in desk locks to prevent theft. A pocket-sized U.S.B. flash drive is another cheaper alternative for storing information -- and ask for help if you aren't sure which operating system will work best for your student.

"There's all kinds of other things that are hot right now. All kinds of music players and stuff like that--  but mainly it's laptop computers, smart phones. it's what people are really getting into right now," CompUSA manager, Chris Johnson said.

Total back-to-school spending is expected to reach $18.4 billion this year.
