Kevin Powell will give an afternoon lecture titled "Motivating Black Males toward Leadership, Academic Success and Networking" at Pulaski Technical College.
His presentation begins at 2 p.m. in the RJ Wills Lecture Hall, located on the second floor of the Campus Center on the college's Main campus, at 3000 West Scenic Drive. The event is free and open to the public.
Powell, 46, of Brooklyn, New York, appeared in the first season of MTV's reality television series, The Real World: New York in 1992. From 1992 to 1996, he was a senior writer for Vibe magazine where he spent several years documenting, most famously, the life and times of the late Tupac Shakur. His book, Tupac Shakur: The Biography, is the first biography authorized by the rapper's mother, Afeni Shakur.
Powell also has hosted and produced programming for HBO and BET and is a frequent guest commentator on VH1, MTV, BET, and other media platforms about popular culture, political and social justice issues. He is a nationally recognized activist who speaks out against violence against girls and women and appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in March 2009.
He also made three runs for the United States Congress in New York's 10th congressional district.
Powell's visit is sponsored by the Pulaski Technical College's Network for Student Success, an initiative that promotes and creates access to supportive relationships that help African-American males overcome barriers to college graduation.
