UPDATE: A Bryant man is dead at the hands of an Alexander police officer -- and the officer says it was all just an accident.

State police say around 4:30 Saturday, Officer Nancy Cummings saw 30-year-old Carelton Wallace walking along Brookwood Road in Alexander.

She told police he had a gun tucked into his waistband. She then says she saw him toss it into the woods.

But while searching him as she tried to arrest him, Officer Cummings says her gun just went off.

Wallace later died at a hospital.

Tonight, the Alexander Police Chief Horace Walters says even though Cummings has less than a year on the job, she -- like his other officers -- was properly trained.

Walters says, "I run an above-board operation. I do not allow haphazard policing and above all, I monitor my officers daily."

Officer Cummings is on paid leave while state police continue to investigate. Ultimately, it will be up to the prosecutor to decide on charges.

Original Story:

Mutliple Law Enforcement crews are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting in Saline County.

That's according to the Saline County Sheriff's office.

It happened near the intersection of Lindsey and Brookwood Street in Alexander.

Police say it was a female officer who shot at a male subject. That person has been taken to the hospital but their condition is unknown.

We have pictures from a crew on the scene, and will follow with details.
