Arkansas' first lady Ginger Beebe was bringing attention to a worthy cause on Friday.

Mrs. Beebe was recognizing International Literacy Day by reading and handing out books to kids at Little Rock's "Our House" shelter for the working homeless.

Those who spoke during today's event emphasized how reading to children can be the most fundamental ways to improve and empower their lives.

"In their vocations, socially, politically, it all begins with literacy, and one of the first things you can do is put a book into the hands of a child," says Chad Cumming of the Alex Foundation.

Friday's event was cosponsored by the Alex Foundation and the Arkansas Reading Association.
