The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff got benched by the NCAA this summer- banned from basketball postseason play in 2013 for failing to meet academic standards.
But the NCAA isn't finished with the Golden Lions, as revealed in a recent request to the Arkansas Legislative Council.
In a letter dated August 7, Department of Finance and Administration Director Richard Weiss informs the ALC the university needs emergency approval to hire an independent compliance audit mandated by the NCAA.
In another letter addressed to UAPB Interim Chancellor, Dr. Calvin Johnson, Athletic Director Lonza Hardy, Jr. says the compliance audit requested a review of the academic progress of every varsity athlete who competed for UAPB in 2007, 2008, and 2009.
Hardy asked for permission to set aside the law requiring the university solicit three bids from contractors before hiring an independent auditor, citing the NCAA's deadline of September 27, 2012.
After several requests for an interview, a spokesperson for Hardy said the athletic director would not be able to talk about the audit Tuesday because he was too busy.
The ALC will review UAPB's request in a hearing Wednesday morning.
