How You Can Get Involved in Hunger Action Month

By: KARK 4 News
Updated: August 31, 2012
September ushers in Hunger Action Month, and anyone can get involved in helping feed needy families.

In Arkansas, the four weeks of September have been themed as LIKE, VISIT, LEARN and DONATE, starting Sept. 2 with a drive to increase our "likes" on Facebook. The first five people to get five likes will receive Hunger Action Month T-shirts from the Foodbank.

During the final week, contributions to the Foodbank will be matched dollar for dollar by AT&T up to a maximum of $6,000, so donors' gifts will be doubled during that week.

Some other activities this month:
  • Thursday, Sept. 6 - Participate in "Wear Orange Day" - the color of Hunger Action Month. Wear something orange today to let everyone know you support the fight against hunger.
  • Saturday, Sept. 8 - Buy a program from a Foodbank volunteer at the Razorback game at War Memorial Stadium. A portion of the sale goes to the Foodbank.
  • Monday-Friday, Sept. 10-14 - Schedule a tour of the Foodbank's warehouse at 4301 W. 65th Street. Tours start at 11:30 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. daily during the week.
  • Saturday, Sept. 15 - See a preview at Market Street Cinema of "Hungry Kate," a short video explaining how the Foodbank helps feed the hungry. Or view it on the Foodbank's YouTube.com page following the premiere.
  • Monday, Sept. 24 - Try a "Virtual Foodbank" donation. The first five donors to our "Virtual Food Drive" at www.arkansasfoodbank.org will receive a Hunger Action Month T-shirt.
  • Monday-Friday, Sept. 24-28 - All week learn about volunteering at the Foodbank and about food drives. Visit www.arkansasfoodbank.org for details.
  • Friday, Sept. 28 - Food Truck Friday on Main Street in Little Rock has a Foodbank theme. Have lunch and meet volunteers from the Foodbank.
  • Saturday, Sept. 29 - Call the Foodbank at (501) 565-8121 to sign up for its Saturday Work Day and help sort and box food to go to hunger relief agencies. Space is limited so call now.
Hunger is an issue that almost 49 million people in the US have to face year-round - but during the month of September everyone can do their part to help raise awareness of hunger in our state and nation. The issue is of particular importance in central and southern Arkansas, where more than 90,000 children are at risk of hunger. Nationally, of the nearly 49 million who struggle with hunger, 16 million are children.

The Arkansas Foodbank, the largest food bank in Arkansas, is a member of Feeding America and the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance. Its warehouses in Little Rock, Warren, and Caddo Valley serve approximately 270 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other agencies that provide aid directly to hungry Arkansans.
