Update (August 28):
The Little Rock Zoo's newest baby made a debut outdoors today.

The gorilla was born earlier this month, but Mother Sekani didn't take her little one outside until this morning. Sekani cradled her baby, who provided a closer look as he laid his head back a few times while our camera zoomed in.

Zookeepers will name the newborn.

Original story (August 23):
For the second time in its history, the Little Rock Zoo has welcomed a baby gorilla.

The western lowland gorilla was born Sunday morning to Sekani and Fossey.

The public is invited to celebrate the birth at a baby shower set for Saturday, September 25, at 11 a.m. at the gorilla exhibit. Guests are invited to bring a shower present for the baby and can view a gift registry online (click here).

The baby gorilla is reported to be in good health, say zoo officials. Mosi, the first gorilla born at the zoo in 2006, recently joined a bachelor group at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago with other gorillas close to his age.

Sekani is in good health and immediately inspected, cleaned, and cradled her new baby and has shown signs of good motherly instinct. The baby is nursing well and zoo staff note that while all behaviors appear to be normal, the next few weeks will be critical in the baby's development and the bonding of the mother and child.

The baby gorilla's sex is still unknown and a name has yet to be selected.

To allow the little one to bond with the entire gorilla family, most members of the family will be off exhibit for the next few days. Zoo staff expect the family to go outside together on Tuesday.

Sekani, mother of the baby, is a 21-year-old western lowland gorilla acquired by the Little Rock Zoo from the Toronto Zoo in 2004. Fossey is a 26-year-old gorilla acquired by the Zoo in 1993 from the Columbus Zoo. The pair was recommended for breeding by the Species Survival Plan (SSP) a breeding and conservation program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

well it seems to me that gloria doesnt know what shes talking about since this story is about a baby gorilla and has nothing to do with the olympics or anything else she was ranting about

Gloria what are you reading that is not there? Did you comment on the right story?

Your reporters comment was insulting and degrading to our country's Olympic gold medalist and our race, and he should apologize. How dare he, think he can get away with making a statement reminiscent of [censored] and particularly confederate southern slave owners regarding how Africans were ape-like and not human. I will initiate a protest of this station if you do not make an effort to correct his performance. Obviously you cannot change his character. We are not apes, ugly, nor knuckle walkers. We are human beings. Name the gorilla after him since he thinks so highly of it. You ought to be looking into the [censored] Jim Crow poll tax techniques of the grand old party in the red segregationist state, or that's not news since it's been going on since before the Civil War.
