Cooler Temperatures Could Bring More Visitors to Hope Watermelon Festival

Fairer weather in Hope (Hempstead County) could help both vendors and visitors at the city's annual watermelon festival.
People there say they're expecting slightly cooler temperatures at the festival, which could mean a higher turnout.
Organizers are expecting tens of thousands of people to attend the 36th Annual Hope Watermelon Festival, where more than 2.5 tons of watermelon could be consumed.
Vendors at the local chamber are expecting to see a lot of people, partly because temperatures, though in the mid to upper 90s, are slightly cooler than last year's festival, which locals say hovered around 105 degrees and beyond.
Some sellers say these temperatures could be good for business.
"We like the more heat, the better, but more people come out if it's not as hot,"
The Hope-Hempstead Chamber says if it gets too hot, there are air-conditioned buildings available for people, and emergency service within the park.
The Hope Watermelon Festival runs through Saturday.
