It happened shortly after three o'clock along the Eastex Freeway (U.S. 59) at Parker Road in Houston, killing a five-year-old Trace Williams, of Pine Bluff.
His mother, her two other children, and a family friend survived the crash with minor injuries.
Police say the little boy died when the vehicle rolled on top of him.
He had been riding in the back seat when the SUV's right rear tire blew out.
A friend vacationing with the family was driving when it happened. She lost control as the vehicle swerved into the center divider, then hit a light pole and rolled onto its roof.
The little boy was pinned underneath the wreckage.
The boy and his family left Corpus Christi earlier in the day and were driving home to Arkansas when the accident happened.
The survivors include the boy's younger sister and brother as well as his mother and the friend who was driving.
Police say the survivors' injuries are not life threatening.
It took hours for police to clear the wreckage.
