That's where programs as simple as backpack meals for children in low income households take on special meaning.
During the school year, backpack meals are sent home with students on Fridays to get them through the weekend.
In this short web extra, counselor Pam Pruitt with Hector Elementary School in Pope County, talks about how one little boy and his mom appreciated the meals.
"We've had one student who is a second grader, whose father died. He was able to go home with his backpack, one particular Friday, and his mom called our principal and said that he was very excited because he got to bring home the food."
