Regular Prenatal Visits Help Maintain Growing Baby's Health

Updated: May 23, 2007
healthAccording to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the moment you find out that you're expecting, schedule a prenatal appointment and maintain routine prenatal visits. Baby's body is not only growing at an incredible rate, but they're also developing essential organs for a healthy body. Regular visits and ultrasounds will help detect any abnormalities, some of which can be treated in utero. Your doctor will initially conduct mom-to-be's physical exam and also perform blood, urine and blood-pressure tests. The doctor will also check for any harmful conditions such as anemia, bladder infections and sexually-transmitted diseases. As mommy and baby grow, the doctor might also conduct a glucose test, to see if mom has developed gestational diabetes, a form of diabetes which only exists during pregnancy and disappears the moment baby is brought into the world.
