The event included a 500-yard swim at Balboa Lake, a 13.5 mile cycle ride and a 3.5 mile run on Magellan Golf Course cart path, and ended at Balboa Pavilion with an awards presentation and celebratory after party..
The 137 athletes ranged in age from 17 to 75 and represented six states: Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Missouri and Louisiana.
The overall winner of the triathlon was Alex Goff, 21, of Conway. A student at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Goff participated in his first triathlon last summer, and in May, he qualified for the U.S. Championship scheduled for September in Des Moines. His total time to complete the TRI-the-Village course was 1:02. "This event was well organized with good traffic control and many friendly and cheering volunteers," said Goff. "The run was the most difficult part because of all the hills but it was challenging. I would definitely come back for another event."
The second and third place winners overall were Clayton Wilkins (1:11), age 17, from Paron, and Patrick Garvin (1:13), age 27, from Little Rock, respectively.
Nineteen people from Hot Springs Village participated in the triathlon, 12 of whom won medals:
- Alan Trippel (3rd Place, Male 60-64)
- Robert Pickett (1st Place, Male 70+)
- Dale Flory (3rd Place, Female 50-54)
- Charlene Reinsch (1st Place, Female 55-59)
- Nicholas Sarver, David Specht and Amanda Sarver (1st Place, Relay Team)
- Nicole Good and Jennifer Rose (2nd Place, Relay Team
- Judith Landes, Phillip Stegall and Dottie Burke (3rd Place, Relay Team).
DLT Events, headed by Fred Phillips, served as event manager for the triathlon. Based in Arkadelphia, DLT organizes about 30 competitive sports events each year in Arkansas and surrounding states. "During the TRI-the-Village, I heard many of the athletes comment on how beautiful it is here," said Mr. Phillips. "This event was very successful, and the key attributes were the huge number of volunteers and their support, as well as the challenge of the course."
About 140 Villagers volunteered to assist with the event in a variety of areas such as water safety, ham radio coverage, and guides on the bike and run courses.
The race benefited Teen Challenge of Arkansas.
