generic-medical-bg2006-12-06-1165467283.jpgWhen placed into the artery, these drug-coated stents, also called drug-elluding, release medicine to prevent the artery from squeezing shut again. But Thursday and Friday, an FDA advisory panel is looking at the stent's long-term safety. Doctor Jay Mehta, who is the Director of Cardiovascular Medicine at UAMS says, "the problem is that there are reports that these drug-elluding stents tend to develop blockages, 1 year, 2 years and 5 years down the road." Those blockages come from blood clots... clots that develop if patients come off the drug Plavix. Doctor Mehta welcomes the FDA investigation, but says there's no "one size fits all" remedy.
