The numbers produced by a 16 month study of school buildings around the state are expected to be at the heart of debate in the legislative session that begins in January. Legislators are to learn today the cost of bringing Arkansas 6,569 public school buildings up to a constitutionally adequate standard. The state has engaged in a 16-month effort to determine the condition of the its more than 84 million square-feet of school buildings. A volunteer task force is scheduled to make its final report. Task force leader Scott Copas is warning legislators to prepare for some eye-popping numbers. Legislators say they fear that the price tag for repairs could be as high as three billion dollars.
